A brief history of SPLOT

1981

Founded in the 'big tent' at the campsite for the Scottish 6 Day Orienteering competition in Galloway. The first committee being: Howard Heath (chairman); Pete Loakes (secretary); Sian Davies (treasurer) and Ian Moran (UWIST Liaison officer).

The orienteering world first heard of SPLOT at an event at OFD in Wales. The terrain was so harsh that Keith Greenall, the first ever competitor to enter under the SPLOT title, decided to twist his ankle in the car park and retire before even competing. Thus SPLOT was initiated.

1982

First Annual General Meeting at the White Rose in August. Agreed to admit ex-members of University College Cardiff. Budget of £50 set for newsletters and address list (vital in days before email!).

1983

New red & yellow O-suits debut at November Classic – first orienteering club to use bright colours in the UK.

1985

SPLOT membership reaches 50. Organised first public orienteering event at Rheola Forest, South Wales in April.

1987

Active on Welsh Orienteering Association committee and helping at UWIST / UCC / Welsh events. Staged relay event at Merthyr Mawr in February and a club event in Wentwood November

1988

Organised first day of the first ever Croeso Welsh multi-day orienteering competition. Also enthusiastic participants in the event social activities!

1991

10th birthday gathering & dinner at Scottish 6-day in Galloway during August. Discovered that actual birthplace of the club was now under the Castle Douglas by-pass.

1992

Again organise a day of Croeso. Also provide the planners for the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon.

1993

Provided day one planner and controllers for J.K. orienteering competition.

1995

Number of non-orienteering trips continues to increase, with mountain biking being added to the list of sports commonly included in SPLOT weekends. Club organise the car parking for the British Orienteering Championships on Anglesey.

1996

Organise a day of Croeso.

1998

Club members active on many social trips, including a visit to the Edinburgh Festival.

2000

Again organise a day of Croeso.

2001

20th birthday party held at the Angel Hotel in Cardiff.

2002

SPLOT goes digital with the publication of SPLOTweb.

2006

25th birthday party held at in Cardiff, including a bus trip around the city.
